FAQ

What is Evaporative Cooling & How it works?

Evaporative Cooling draws fresh air from outside your home, filters it, cools it via a honeycomb pad, and then circulates it through your home, forcing out hot, stale air through open doors and windows.

Bonaire’s Evaporative Air Coolers are built with three main components. A fan, water circulating pump system, and honeycomb padding for effective cooling. This 3-speed fan absorbs warm air. Then evaporation converts the moisture into water vapor and cools it down. A more humid air then flows out from the other side.

It is important to ventilate while using an evaporative air cooler. Simply open a window or keep the door open to eliminate over-humidity and allow the circulation of fresh air. Also, honeycomb padding may have some distinct odor when used first, but it will slowly dissipate in a few hours.

How much energy does Evaporative Cooling save versus a refrigerated system?

A Bonaire Evaporative Cooler uses approximately one quarter of the electrical energy required versus a refrigerated system.

How quiet are Durango units?

The specially designed axial fans and 2 motor system, one for the fan and one for the pump, ensure minimum noise and maximum cooling performance even on low speeds.

How is an air cooler different from a standard fan?

Standard fans use their blades to circulate air in the room, but they don’t cool the hot air. Air coolers use the natural process of evaporation to cool the hot air and use a powerful fan to distribute cool air in the entire room. When water transforms into water vapor through evaporation, the temperate of hot dry air can drop significantly.

How large of an area will it cool?

The CFM of the cooler indicates its cooling capacity. For instance, a cooler with a CFM of 600, can affect a radius of around 400 sq. ft. A cooler with a CFM of 3100 can cool a space of around 950 sq. ft. Evaporative air cooling also depends on the humidity and heat of its environment.

Can I use an air cooler while running central air or central heat?

An evaporative air cooler can minimize the need of solely depending on central air conditioners to cool your home. They help to circulate air all around the room while boosting the AC’s cooling action. Less air conditioning means more cost savings. Air coolers also help to add moisture to the over-dried air caused due to air conditioning. Evaporative air coolers act as a humidifier in winters.

How often and when should I clean my Bonaire unit?

We recommend cleaning your Bonaire unit once in the middle of the year and again at the end of the summer. It is best to use clean fresh water when cleaning out the unit. The recommend process for cleaning your unit is set out in the Owner’s Manual. If your unit operates in areas with harsh water, you may need additional cleaning throughout the year.

Do I need to have my windows open when my Bonaire unit is running?

Always ensure that there is an open window or door through which the air can exhaust. This constant air exchange is essential, and a major benefit provided by Bonaire fresh air cooling. (Do not open doors or windows on the windward side of the home)

Can I use ice or cold water in my evaporative cooler for extra cooling?

Some models allow you to add ice or cold water to the water reservoir, enhancing the cooling effect.
